Great contemporary feel. Great location for the City centre. Some road noise. Excellent breakfast - great choice cooked to order. Much better than buffet style. Loved the indoor/outdoor pool. Gym is small would have liked a rower.

The hotel seems very new. It is an amazing looking historical building, yet everything else about the hotel is extremely contemporary. The reception area consists of a room with a staff member standing at a small table in the centre of the room with a laptop computer. I have come across this type of reception once before and find it too public; it does not give the guest any privacy. On arrival the guests are offered the use of a complimentary iPad for the duration of their stay. The public spaces are generous and comfortable, including bar and lounge and outdoor lounge although I didn't go outside as it was raining while I was there. I ate in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. The dinner menu was first class. The wine list comes accompanied by an iPad on which you can find out more about the wines on offer. The breakfast menu had plenty on offer. The location of the hotel is excellent. Although it was raining, I used the hotel's umbrella and walked to the main shopping centre and also the Exeter Cathedral in about five minutes. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Only two things I'd comment on here. My bathroom was tiny. I was booked in as a single and my room was on the top floor, so it was an 'attic' room. I was told I had been upgraded to a double, and the room had a double bed but definitely would not be comfortable for two people in my opinion. Although the bar had a smart coffee machine, with all the bells and whistles, the coffee was weak and tasteless. Someone needs to do some serious barista training, if they are to attain the same standard as the rest of the hotel.

The various rooms with open fires. Lovely pool, friendly staff and the relaxed atmosphere.

Excellent room - fabulous bed and use of a ipad was a lovely touch. Lunch was great too.

The ambiance of the hotel was relaxed and welcoming . The building itself was interesting in decor and very comfortable. The food was excellent and the staff helpful and efficient.

Rather odd to have to go through the conservatory bar to get to the pool but minor inconvenience.

Superb Hotel with very helpful, friendly, and predominently English staff. Lovely room with lovely touches such as ipad & nespresso machine. Restaurant quality excellent and Pool/Spa areas well worth a visit. Will definietly return to this Hotel.

Really small point - difficult to understand how to adjust room temperature - control was complicated & no obvious instructions. However, windows do open so not a problem !

The hotel is a mixture of old and ultra modern. It is a very luxurious hotel and the bed was extremely comfortable. There is also a lift, which makes it easier for people who can't manage the stairs. The food was excellent and there is plenty of alternitive and private places to eat apart from the diningroom. Room service is also available, which we didn't try, and they also have an outside heated pool. All the staff were friendly and helpful and it was spotlessly clean all through the hotel, with several coal fires around the ground floor. The shops are two minutes walk away from the hotel. parking is limited, but there is a pay and display just around the corner from the hotel. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to family and friends and would definitely stay there again.

There was nothing that I disliked about the Magdalen chapter.

The staff were all young and, clearly enthusiastic. I had several concierge type requests - Taxis, arranging a hire car, booking restaurants, times of mass, etc, all of which were dealt with quickly and by whichever staff was available. Had dinner in the restaurant which was delicious and local ingredients.. Loved the breakfasts too!! I am 68 and remember visiting the place (then an eye hospital) 60 years ago. A rather different experience. Will definitely stay at a Chapter hotel again.

Good attention to detail, ipad, mini bar, helpful staff, nespresso machine

room quite small, water barely hot enough and certainly not enough to fill the fantastic bath.

Clean, modern rooms. Friendly staff, excellent restaurant. Excellent breakfast.

Modern and clean hotel with great staff. Lots of facilities in the room including Nespresso machine and good entertainment system. Very much the 5 star experience.

The heating didn't work in the bathroom and it was as cold as ice in there. This was a shame as the rest of the experience was great.

Staff: Exemplary. Proffessional manner and attentive without being intrusive Room: We booked a double (room 307) and contrary to other reviews I've read, I considered this room to be of a decent size and not at all claustrophobic. The room looked and felt comfortable, yet elegant. The bed was very comfortable also, the room was spotless and I liked that the lighting was adjustable. The room temperature was ideal but there was air-conditioning, if needed. The complimentary mini bar was well-stocked and the tea and coffee facilities were very good. The room was quiet at night. I'm glad this hotel has moved on from providing complimentary bottles of shampoo and shower gel etc. as they tend to be poor quality and the bottles are wasteful to the environment. The provision of large dispensers in the shower where you can use as much high quality Ren shower gel, shampoo and conditioner as you want is a much better idea that rubbish little bottles! Restaurant: Service was excellent. The complimentary bread was delicious. We had a delicious three course meal. Even the veg was cooked in butter so not healthy but everything was opulent, flavoursome and filling. Braised beef is highly recommended. Two three course meals with a glass of wine and a beer came to a reasonable £63. Room service breakfast: Granola, fruit and yoghurt were excellent. The scrambled eggs were not bad and the bacon was okay although the black pudding was overcooked. It was still a tasty breakfast over all and a convenient service. Over all, this is an excellent hotel.

Nothing I didn't really like. Bring an eye mask though if you need to sleep in complete darkness because the rooms are quite bright at night with the light from the corridor shining under the doors.

The luxury of the room is beyond compare, with bedding, bathroom comforts, in-room tastings and art/lighting of the highest quality. We have not experienced this level of service ever in a 5* hotel. The heated in/out pool (in 4ºC) was wonderful. The dining room served dinner to compare with any award-winning restaurant. The "common " areas were relaxing and pleaded to be enjoyed. Above all, the staff were friendly, courteous, and most helpful. We shall certainly return here.

It is impossible to find any fault with this venture.

Fabulous design hotel with a blazing fire in the entrance hall and a steaming outdoor pool. Staff really helpful and the roaming check in was a lot more fun than the normal hotel reception. Impressed by the coffee machines in the bedrooms and the fluffy white dressing gowns. The restaurant was fully booked so no chance to try it out. But would definitely like to go back.
